(d) Viral infections can be diagnosed by either detection of the virus or by detection of
antibodies to the virus. Outline four approaches which can be used to detect the virus or
components of the virus in animals tissues. (4 Marks)
(e) Briefly elaborate why despite intensive research, there are few drugs available for the
treatment of viral infections. (3 Marks)
(f) For each clinical scenario below, select the most appropriate treatment from the list of

(v) 42 year old woman with chronic active hepatitis C infection confirmed by
liver biopsy.
