QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS
a. Define the following:

a. There are 2,000 houses along Thika road Nairobi. If you want to pick a sample of 200 houses:
i. Explain how you would go about selecting your sample (5 Marks)
ii. Compute your sampling interval (5 Marks)
b. Discuss the situation in which you would apply stratified random technique giving you reasons.
(5 Marks)
c. Discuss observations method of data collection citing its advantages and disadvantages.
(5 Marks)

QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS
Suppose you are in a situation where you are to use quota sampling method in an enquiry about
knowledge, attitude and practices of people living with HIV/AIDS of Meru University students.
Illustrate with a table how you would obtain a sample of 200 students from the MUST population of
1000 students. (20 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR – 20 MARKS
a. Explain the main distinction between incidence and prevalence citing relevant examples.
(5 Marks)
b. The estimated mid year population for region A in the year 2000 was 761,335 of which 76,000 were
in the age group 1 – 4 years. During the year there were 700 attacks of measles in the age group 1 –
4 years. The total new cases of Tuberculosis were 912; the total cases of tuberculosis present in the
year were 23,000. From this information:
i. Calculate incidence rate for tuberculosis (5 Marks)
ii. Age specific incidence rate for measles in the age group 1 – 4 years (5 Marks)
iii. Prevalence rate for tuberculosis (5 Marks)
