QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS
a. List and explain briefly three points showing the importance of statistics. (6 Marks)
b. The age of children in a peadiatric ward was given as follows:

Find the quartiles and represent the data in a box and whisker diagramme. (6 Marks)
c. The mean number of caesarian sections in a certain hospital is 5 per week. Find the probability that
there will be less than three sections in a given week. (6 Marks)
d. The number of new admissions per day in a certain hospital follows a normal distribution with a
mean of 15 and a standard deviation of 5. Find the probability that the number will be less than 8
on any given day. (6 Marks)
e. An anaesthetic drug purported to give an effective period of 2.5hours was used on seven patients
and the effective times recorded had a mean of 2.1 hours and a standard deviation of 0.3hours. Use
the information to test the claim at 5% level of significance. (6 Marks)
QUESTION TWO – 20 MARKS
To find out which one of the three common painkillers is most used, independent samples of users from
3 different villages were taken and each respondent named the painkiller he/she uses most. The
following results were recorded.

QUESTION FOUR – 20 MARKS
A researcher wants to find if a certain drug has an effect on the pulse rate of human subjects. The
following results are obtained when the drug is used on five patients of almost the same weight.

a. Draw a scatter plot of y against x and discuss it. (8 Marks)
b. Find the coefficient of correlation and the equation of the relationship. (12 Marks)
