a. Discuss the criteria used in determination of sustainable waste water treatment options.

b. Explain the sources and composition of waste water. (5 Marks)
c. The per capita affluent of a small community in MERU town is 200 litres. The per capita BOD is
120 grammes. What is the resulting BOD of the sewage in the community? (5 Marks)
d. Differentiate between percolating filters and waste stabilization ponds. (5 Marks)
e. Compare and contrast evapo-transpiration beds with mound or fill systems. (5 Marks)
f. Describe how liquid wastes (waste water) can be recycled and give an example of how waste
water from the kitchen sink can be used. (5 Marks)
QUESTION TWO – 20 MARKS
An oxidizable material in a natural water way or in a domestic or industrial waste water can be
oxidized both by bio-chemical or chemical processes causing relative oxygen-depletion effect:
a. What tests are used to measure this oxygen depletion effect? (10 Marks)
b. What are the units of measurement of these tests? (10 Marks)

Comment on the compositions of sewage from a community in a rural area and that from urban area.
Give advice on the two types of sewage regarding their treatment. (20 Marks)

Waste stabilization ponds are the most widely used method of waste water treatment. What are the
advantages and disadvantages of this method? (20 Marks)
