(d) Using an example for each, briefly describe the following hazardous waste treatment
methods.
(i) Physical (2 Marks)
(ii) Chemical (2 Marks)
(iii) Biological (2 Marks)
(e) List the characteristics of hazardous waste giving an example for each. (8 Marks)
(f) Outline stages in the conventional solid waste management system. (4 Marks)
QUESTION TWO – (20 MARKS)
(a) ‘According to a report by the Basel convention report of 2001, hazardous waste is
increasing in quantity and complexity globally’ Using examples justify the above
statement. (6 Marks)
(b) Describe three methods of solid waste transportation highlighting one advantage of each.
(9 Marks)

QUESTION THREE – (20 MARKS)
(a) ‘A minimum DRE of 99.9% for most organic compounds and a DRE of 99.9% for
dioxins and dibenzo furans and dioxins should be achieved for efficient combustion’.
The above quote on incinerators suggests a standard by which performance of hazardous
waste incinerators can be measured.
(i) Briefly explain the abbreviation DRE. (3 Marks)
(ii) For most institutions in Kenya using incinerators for hazardous waste
management, it’s difficult to achieve a minimum DRE of 99.9% for organics,
dioxins or furans. Discuss using an example. (12 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR – (20 MARKS)
(a) Differentiate between dry waste and green waste. (2 Marks)
(b) Describe the use of dernol biostabilizers. (12 Marks)
(c) ‘Dernol biostabilizers uses anaerobic decomposition’. Is this statement true or false?
