QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a) Distinguish between the following;
i. Research and science (3 Marks)
ii. Reliability and validity. (2 Marks)
iii. Qualitative and quantitative methods. (2 Marks)
b) Discuss the importance of literature review in research. (5 Marks)
c) Describe the different types of variables used in creating a conceptual framework for a
research. (5 Marks)
d) i) You are conducting an experimental randomized control trial on hypertensive drug and
interested in knowing the minimum number of respondents suitable to give statistical
significance value at 0.05, at an expected difference of 10mmHg systolic blood pressure as the
considered error. Results from similar survey conducted indicated standard deviation of
15mmHg. Calculate the required minimum sample size at 95% confidence level. (4 Marks)
ii) Given the expected test difference was to be decreased to 5mmHg. How would this
influence the sample size. (2 Marks)
e) Why is it necessary to do sampling in research? Explain the sampling techniques commonly
used. (7 Marks)

You are newly promoted to head human resource department in your organization. You have been
allocated research funds for the financial year 2012/2013. You are expected to develop a research
proposal that addresses staff attrition rate. Use the following as guideline to develop your proposal.
a) Suitable title that you would want to research on.
b) i) Outline three objectives you will undertake in the study.
ii) Give a test hypothesis and an alternative hypothesis.
c) Describe the tools and or instruments you intend to use to achieve your objectives.
d) List three different types of information you will collect in your study.
e) How will you ensure validity in your study?
