a) i) Solve the equation 2??2 - 3?? - 7 = 0 by the method of completing the square. (3 Marks) ii) A group of young men decided to raise Ksh. 480,000 to start a business. Before the actual payment was made, four of the members pulled out and each of those remaining had to pay an additional Ksh. 20,000. Determine the original number of members. (3 Marks) b) There are 87 shilling to the dollar and 52 Indian rupees per dollar. What is the exchange rate between the shilling and the Indian rupee? (2 Marks) c) i) Okoth pays Ksh. 2,700 for an item after getting a discount of 10% . Find the marked price for the item. (2 Marks) ii) The item above had cost the seller Ksh1800. Calculate the mark up and the margin for the seller. (4 Marks) d) find y without using a calculator if 2 + log2 3 - log2 ?? = log2 5 + 1 . f) Maria invested a certain amount of money in a bank which paid a simple interest. After 5 years, her total savings were Ksh. 56,000. Determine the amount of money she invested initially. (3 Marks) g) Given 8.6???? ÷ 3.4????, find i. The absolute error in the quotient. (2 Marks) ii. The relative error in the quotient. (2 Marks) h) There are fourteen juniors and twenty three seniors in a service club. The club is to send four representatives to a state conference. If the members decide to send two juniors and two seniors, how many different groupings are possible? (3 Marks)

a) A man wants to have Ksh. 300,000 in 8 years. How much money must he invest now if the rate of interest is 7.5% compound interest? (3 Marks) b) A minibus costs sh. 800,000. Due to inflation, it depreciates its value by 2% every month. Find its value after one an half years. (3 Marks) c) Mugaka wants to buy a sewing machine on hire purchase. It has cash price of sh.75,000. He can make a down payment of Ksh.22,500 and 15 monthly installments of Ksh. 5,500 each. How much interest does he pay under this payment plan? (4 Marks)

Mr Kamau earns a basic monthly salary of Ksh. 50,000. On top of his salary, he gets a house allowance of Ksh.12,000 a medical allowance of Ksh. 3,060 and a hardship allowance of Ksh. 4.635.

a) Solve for x and y in 2?? + 3?? = 5 ???? = 1 (3 Marks) b) Peter journey before the bicycle develops a mechanical problem and he had to push it for the rest of the journey. If his cycling speed is 10km/h faster than his walking speed and he completes the journey in 3 hours 20 minutes, determine his cycling speed. (7 Marks)

a) The second term of an arithmetic sequence is 7 and the ninth term is 28. Find the common difference and the first term of the sequence. (5 Marks) b) The sum of the first three terms of a geometric series is 26. If the common ratio is 3, find the sum of the first six terms. (5 Marks)

Kanene takes out a mortgage from a building society to buy a house worth Ksh. 5 million. The society charges compound interest at 8% p.a. Ms Kanene pays a deposit of 15% of the total amount of the mortgage and the balance is to be paid in equal monthly installments over a period of 20 years. Calculate
a) Total amount of the mortgage. (4 Marks) b) Amount paid as the down payment. (2 Marks) c) Balance to be paid over 20 years. (2 Marks) d) Amount of every monthly installments. (2 Marks)
