Answer four questions. All questions carry equal marks.

1. Discuss the concept of abnormal behavioral and mental functioning.

2. Using the neurobiological and cognitive perspectives, explain the occurrence of dysfunctional behaviour in man

3. Using examples, define the following terms that represent the dominant paradigms of the late 19th C, as explanations of abnormal psychological functioning:
a) Psychogenic perspective
b) Somatogenic perspective

4. Define the term drug in relation to substance abuse. Use examples to discuss the possible causes of substance abuse among a population in an urban area.

5. What is anxiety? Using the behavioral system of therapy, describe how you would manage a client with a simple phobia for sailing in a ship.

6. Distinguish between acute and chronic schizophrenia. Discuss at least five presenting symptoms that would suggest a diagnosis of this disorder in a client.

7. In recent years, keen observation of media reports seems to suggest an increased prevalence of domestic violence within the country. Define the concept of domestic violence and hypothesis on the factors causing this trend.
