QUESTION TWO – (15 MARKS)
(a) (i) Define the term “mole fraction” (2 Marks)

(ii) A solution is composed of 36 gm water and 46gm ethanol, (??2??5????). Calculate the
mole fraction of each component of the mixture. (6 Marks)
[H = 1, C = 12, O = 16]
(b) A buffer solution was prepared by mixing 200cm3 of 0.6M ammonia solution and
300cm3of a 0.3M ammonium chloride solution to make 500cm3 final volume of the
mixture.
(i) Calculate the molar concentration of each of Ammonia and Ammonium Chloride
added to the solution to make the buffer. (3 Marks)
(ii) Ammonia and water reacts and establishes the following equilibrium.
NH3 + H2O ? NH4
+ + OH-, Kb = 1.8x10-5 and given that H+ [OH-]
= 1.0X10-14 Calculate the pH of the buffer in b(i) above.
