QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)
a) Describe the hazardous mechanical motions and operations associated with the following
types of tannery machines.
i. Process vessels [4marks]
ii. Multi-rollers [4 marks]
iii. Splitting machines [4 marks]
b) Outline appropriate safety measuresto reduce the risk of injury in each case mentioned
above. [7 marks]
c) What are the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) concerns associated with the
following chemicals used in the tannery?
i. Calcium hydroxide (Lime) [2 mark]
ii. Sodium sulfide [2 mark]
iii. Chromium (III) salts [2 mark]
d) Briefly outline key measures that can be undertaken by a particular tannery management
to improve Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (OSH&E) of the workers.

a) What are the effects of heat on the body and how does heat affect productivity of the worker?

QUESTION THREE (20 MARKS)
a) During an Occupational Safety, Health and Environment risk assessment in a particular
tannery the following observations were made:
- The factory floor was wet with pools of water
- Used chemical packets, cartons, containers and pallets were stored in the factory alleys and in
a room where workers use for changing.
- Some electrical sockets were exposed and some cables supplying electricity to the machines
ran across the factory floor, workers routinely walked over them.
- Vibration staking machine made loud noise while in operation the operator frequently had to
shout to his colleague to bring more supplies to be worked on. His colleague complains of
back pains because of bending and routinely making several trips carrying heavy leathers
without rest.
- Buffing machine was producing a lot of dust and particles, operators had their faces and hair
covered with dust.
Based on the above observations outline appropriate safety and protective measures to be
undertaken to improve the safety, health and environment in this tannery. [20 marks]
