QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS
a. Define the following terms and state their units: (4 Marks) i. Electromotive force ii. Resistance
b. Calculate the resistance of copper wire 3.7kM whose cross-sectional area is 0.85mm2. Take resistivity of copper to be 1.7 x 10-8O/m. (2 Marks)
c. State the following Kirchoffs laws: (2 Marks) i. Current law ii. Voltage law
d. Define the following thermo-electric characteristics of materials, stating appropriate examples. (4 Marks) e. Two resistors 5kO and 27kO were connected in series across 220volts. Calculate the total power dissipated by the combined load. (3 Marks)
f. State two Faradays laws of electrolysis. (3 Marks)
g. Distinguish between the following types of chemical cells: (3 Marks) i. Primary cells ii. Secondary cells
h. Using a well labeled diagram, explain the operation of a simple copper zinc secondary cell. (5 Marks)

QUESTION TWO – 15 MARKS
a. Explain the causes of the following problems and how they can be eliminated. (4 Marks)
b. A coil of Nickel wire has resistance of 120O at 23oC. When the coil is connected to electrical supply the resistance increases to 170O. If the temperature coefficient of resistance of Nickel is 0.006/oC, determine the temperature attained by the coil. (5 Marks)
c. For the circuit above, calculate the total resistance and the current flowing through the circuit. (6 Marks)
QUESTION THREE – 15 MARKS
a. An electrical element 6 meters long with cross-sectional area 0.52mm2, has resistivity 0.00157Om. The element is connected to 220V a.c. Calculate: (9 Marks) i. Resistance of the element ii. Power dissipated by the element iii. Amount energy consumed after 35minutes.
b. State any six consideration in the care and maintenance of lead acid cells. (6 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR – 15 MARKS
a. State ohms law. (2 Marks) b. Describe three methods of used of charging batteries. (6 Marks) c. State three indicators of a fully charged battery. (3 Marks) d. Using Kirchoffs law calculate the amount of current flowing through R1 and R2. (4 Marks)
