QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS
You want to use a genetic algorithm to design a schedule for each of the traffic lights downtown, to ensure that traffic flows smoothly both during peak and low traffic periods. Define all the parameters required. Show how your system would evaluate four different chromosomes and demonstrate how mutation and crossover would work on these chromosomes. (Use a four way junction to generate your system) (20 Marks)

a. Define knowledge and give a brief description of how it is acquired. (4 Marks) b. Meru University wants to develop a farming expert system for its farm. This system provides all the necessary advisory services of the agricultural extensions officer. i. Develop a symbol system of 10 rules that touches on the aspects of farming ii. Such system is developed by various stakeholders. Name them and give a brief explanation of its role. (10 Marks) c. State and briefly describe unique features of LISP programming language. (6 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE – 20 MARKS
a. Define the following terms: (2 Marks) i. Inheritance ii. Semantic network b. Describe the depth first search techniques in artificial intelligence stating their advantages and disadvantages. (5 Marks) c. A service centre keeps spare parts and repairs failed ones. A customer brings a failed item and receives a spare of the same type. Failed parts are repaired, placed on the shelf and thus become spares. The objective is to advise a manager of the service centre on certain decision policies to keep the customers satisfied. There are four main linguistic variables: average waiting time (mean delay) m, repair utilization factor of the service centre p, number of servers s, and initial number of spare parts. Develop a fuzzy logic expert system to operate the service centre. Use triangular membership functions. (13 Marks)
