QUESTION ONE – 30 MARKS
a. Distinguish between the following terms relating to information systems (6 Marks) b. Outline six golden principles of interface design. (6 Marks) c. Suggest six areas an organization would consider when reviewing the performance of a system. (6 Marks) d. Briefly explain the importance of systems theory concepts. (4 Marks) e. Explain the advantages of walkthroughs in system developments. (4 Marks) f. Outline the steps that would be used in developing a prototype. (4 Marks)
QUESTION TWO – 20 MARKS
a. A college offers correspondence courses to students. Each course lasts 20 weeks and is based on a weekly study module and progress test. At the end of the course students sit an invigilated examination. The college registrar deals with enquiries and application and students applying who have sufficient qualifications are asked to register by completing and submitting an application form. After approval by the Academic Director the application form is returned to the Register who creates a student file. The Accounts Department receive the application form and using information from the student file creates an invoice that is sent to the student. Payments made are registered on the invoice file. The first batch of student material and tests is issued from the library only to students who have paid fees (this information is taken from the invoice file). Progress tests are marked by academic staff and the results together with comments are sent out with next week’s study block. The library will only issue study material/progress tests when a student has returned test answers from the previous week. Construct a Level 1 Data flow diagram for the college. (6 Marks) b. Some of the tasks involved in system implementation include training, testing and file conversion. What are the objectives of training? (4 Marks) c. Outline any four methods you can use to deal with user resistance to the deployment of a new systems. (4 Marks) d. As the systems analysts appointed to investigate the possibility of acquiring a CASE tool to be used in conjunction with an existing structured approach, explain to senior management why such tool is needed. (6 Marks)

QUESTION THREE – 20 MARKS
a. Suppose you are a project manager using the waterfall development methodologies on a large and complex project. Your manager has just read the latest article in computer world that advocates replacing the waterfall methodology with prototyping and comes to your office requesting you to switch. What will be your decision? (6 Marks) b. Outline the factors that should be considered when selecting a supplier computer hardware and software. (4 Marks) c. Anything that threatens the success of a project represents a risk to it. Describe the steps of risk management. (4 Marks) d. Systems analysts require three views of any system that they are developing. These cover the way data flows, the entities involved and the timing of the events and their effects that occur in the processing involved. Briefly describe each of the three major tools that the system analyst will use. (6 Marks)
QUESTION FOUR – 20 MARKS
a. An analyst investigating an order processing system has found the following rules are applied by order clerks:
All orders received by the company are checked by order clerks. The order clerk first calculates the value of the order and adds that value to the customer’s current credit balance. If the credit balance exceeds the customer’s credit limit the current payment record is investigated. All such customers who have no invoices older than 30 days are notified that their order is on hold and that the order has been passed to the accounts manager who will contact them in the next three days. However, if the credit limit is exceeded and any invoice is older than 30 days, then the order is rejected. If the customer has not exceeded the credit limit then the current payment record is still investigated to find whether there are invoices older than 30 days. If there are, then the order is processed but a reminder letter is sent reminding the customer of the payment terms. In all other circumstances the order is reminding the customer of the payment terms. In all other circumstances the order is processed without query.
Construct a decision table for the process described above. (6 Marks) b. Standards are important in most aspects of an Information System (IS) project including its documentation. Briefly describe six benefits of standards in information systems development. (6 Marks) c. SSADM has a number of advantages over other approaches to systems development. Outline four advantages of SSADM. (4 Marks) d. Outline four potential disadvantages and problems of outsourcing the information systems department. (4 Marks)
QUESTION FIVE – 20 MARKS
a. Briefly describe the four quadrants of the spiral model of systems development. (6 Marks) b. Discuss the core activities in the systems implementation stage. (6 Marks) c. Identify four challenges a system analyst is likely to encounter in his or her work. (4 Marks) d. Suggest four common reasons why managers would initiate an IS project. (4 Marks)
