. SECTION A:40 MARKS

1. With the aid of examples explain the major differences between gram positive and gram negative bacteria.

2. Describe three processing areas where micro organisms are of economical importance. In each area indicate the microorganisms involved and give a brief outline of the procedures.

3. Describe briefly the fungal agents that affect the central nervous system.

4. Explain the mode of transmission of viral infections.

5. Describe the morphological features used to classify bacteria.

6. Briefly describe the laboratory techniques used for the diagnosis of viral infections.
7. Briefly describe the microbial water analysis.
8. Outline the laboratory methods used to diagnose HIV- infections.

SECTION B: 30 MARKS

9. Write an essay on tuberculosis.
10. Describe in details the application of microbial techniques on the quality control of milk and related diary products.
