Introduction to Electric Circuits.

Review Questions.

1. Why can Ohm''s law be described in terms of constant proportionality?

2. Why does the V/I ratio of an electric circuit indicate its ability to oppose electric current rather than the ability to permit current?

3. If there were no such unit as the ohm, how could you express the resistance of an electric circuit?

4. If resistance is the opposition to electric current, energy must be expended in forcing free electrons to move against this opposition. Where does this energy come from? Where does it go?

5. What relationship exists between the resistance of a given conductor and the number of free electrons in the conductor?

6. An electric fuse consists of a small strip of metal with a low melting temperature. The current in the protected electric circuit flows through this strip of metal. Which will have the greater resistance, a 10-A fuse or a 20-A fuse? Explain.

7. A resistor made of Nichrome wire wound on a ceramic form has the same resistance and is passing the same current as the filament of an incandescent lamp, yet the temperature of the lamp filament is many times that of the Nichrome resistor. Explain.

8. Why does shortening the length of a given conductor decrease its resistance?

9. Why is resistance inversely proportional to the square of the diameter of a conductor?

10. Why does the term resistivity apply to the material of an electric conductor, rather than to a particular conductor?
