1. a)Briefly describe the meaning of the following terms:
Zeeman effect
Hamiltonian operator

b) Compare the energy of a mole of photons of orange light (625) with the energy
of amole of photons of microwave radiation having a frequency of 2.5 Ghz.

2. a)The lyman series of spectral lines for the H atom , in the ultraviolet region,
arises from transition from higher levels to n=1.Calculate the frequency and
wavelength of the least energetic line in this series. (10 marks)

b)Using postulate of the Bohr theory , derive an expression to show that the Bohr
Orbits are quantized. (8marks)

c)State the THREE non-derivable fundamental postulate upon which quantum
mechanics is based in the treatment of the atomic electron. (6 marks)
