SECTION A: 40 MARKS
1.Using examples differentiate between:
a)Roots and tubers(2 marks)
b)Full fat soybean meal and soybean extracted by solvent method(5 marks)
2.Protein of animal origin is utilized sparingly in livestock rations. Elaborate the statement citing your justification(2 marks)
3.Apart from supplying energy, give three reasons for adding fats to livestock rations(6 marks)
4.Briefly describe any 5 considerations when formulating a ration for a lactating dairy cow(10 marks)
5.Highlight measures that a farmer can use at the farm level to improve nutritive value and utilization of crop residues(5 marks)
6.Using specific examples describe the role of additives in animal nutrition(10 marks)
SECTION B:60 MARKS
7.Discuss the losses that occur in hay making and their mitigation measures(10 marks)
8.Outline the advantages and disadvantages of silage(10 marks)
9.Anti-nutritive factors in feed ingredients are a major limitation to their effective utilization. Discuss any five anti-nutritive factors showing their sources, impact on livestock and remedial measures that can be applied to mitigate their effects(15 marks)
10.A large scale poultry farmer keeping layer birds want to formulate a layer ration containing 20%CP and weighing 250kg, using the following ingredients: Ground yellow maize(10%CP) and three year wheat (12%CP) in the ratio of 3:1, soybean meal(35%CP) as the main protein source. The farmer uses vitamin-mineral premix(0%CP) and fish meal(60%CP) at 3% and 4% of ration dry matter weight respectively.
(a)Give two reason why the farmer used the following ingredients
(i)Ground yellow maize(4 marks)
(ii)Fish meal(4 marks)
(b)Give reasons why the farmer used
(i)Three year old wheat instead of newly harvested wheat(2 marks)
(ii)Fishmeal restricted at 4% of ration rather than higher levels(1 mark)
(c)Using Pearson's square method and taking into account the CP from the fish meal calculate the quantity(in Kgs) of each ingredient used in the whole ration(14 marks)
