Question 1
(a)
Define ‘Bilingualism’ and describe the three types of bilingualism in terms of the ways
in which concepts of a language are encoded in the individual’s brain (Weinreich 1953).
b)
Describe the circumstances under which Pidgin and Creole occur, and give three
examples of countries where Pidgin or Creole exists, saying what factors contributed to
the development of the situation.
Question 2
a)
Explain what you understand by the term ‘Diglossia’ and give eight separate areas
in which H and L may differ. In your opinion, is Kenya a diglossic country?
b)
Discuss the Nativist and Behaviorist theories of first language acquisition. Which
theory do you support and why?

(a)
Describe with examples the relationship between the ‘centre’ and the ‘periphery’ in the
Dependency Theory, and say how this relationship has influenced choice of language
policies in developing countries.
b)
According to Mackey (1968), an individual’s degree of bilingualism is determined by
acquisition of a number of language skills. Describe seven of these skills.
Question 4
a)
The colonizer’s language tend to have an effect on the choice of a country’s
language policy. Give four reasons why independent African countries continue to
use colonial languages in education and give six reasons why they should stop.
b)
Compare and contrast language policies of Namibia and Tanzania, giving advantages
and disadvantages of using each in the two countries.
Question 5
a)
Define the following terms in sociolinguistics, and give examples of situations in Kenya
where these occur: Language Variety, Dialect, Accent, Standard language and Lingua
franca.
b)
Explain with examples the patterns of language use in Kenya. In your opinion, do you
think these patterns can survive in the 21st century?
