Instructions: answer question one and any other three questions.

QUESTION ONE
a) Explain factors you would consider in selecting an appropriate sampling designs , use relevant examples.( 3mks )

b) Discuss properties of a good estimator ( 3mks)
c) An inspection department is trying to determine appropriate sample size to use. They wish to be within 5% of true proportion. Past records indicate that the proportion defective is 3 in a 100. What sample size should they use. ( 5 mks)

d) Surveys are conducted in Nakuru and Eldoret to ascertain viewers habits regarding NTV television. In Nakuru 1,000 people are interviewed and 680 said they viewed NTV. In Eldoret 600 people were interviewed and 444 said they viewed NTV. Is there a significance difference between viewing habits in Nakuru and Eldoret at the 1% level? ( 7 mks )

e) A multiple- choice test consists of 8 questions with 3 answers to each question (of which one is correct). A student answers each question by rolling a balanced dice and checking the first answer if he gets 1 or 2, the second answer if he gets 3 or 4 and the third answer if he gets 5 or 6. To get distinction, the student must secure at least 75% correct answers. If there is no negative marking, what is the probability that the student secures distinction? (10 mks)

QUESTION TWO
a) Explain the meaning and application of standard errors. ( 6mks)

b) A firm ordered sacks of chemicals with a nominal weight of 50 kg. A random sample of 8 sacks was taken and it was found that the sample mean was 49.2 kg with a standard deviation of 1.6 kg. The firm wish to test whether the weight mean of the sample sacks is significantly less than the nominal weight, using the 5% level of significance (9 mks)
QUESTION THREE
a) Explain the application of t distribution in inferential statistics. ( 5mks)

b) A manufacturer of TV sets was trying to find out what variables influenced the purchase of a TV set. Level of income was suggested as possible variables influencing the purchase of TV sets. A sample of 500 households was selected and the information obtained is classified as shown below.

Is their evidence from above data of a relationship ownership of TV set and level of income? (10 mks)

QUESTION FOUR
a) Compare and contrast simple statistic and population parameter in a normally distributed population ( 5 mks)

b) 10 workers are selected at a random from a large number of workers in a factory. The number of items produced by them at a certain day are found to be:

In the light of above data, would it be appropriate to suggest that the mean of the number of items produced in the population is 116? (10 mks)

QUESTION FIVE
a) What are the assumptions of chi – square? ( 5mks)

b) A company makes a microchip in batches of 6. In a sample of 100 batches the following number of rejects were found:

Test at the 5% level to see whether the frequency of rejects in a batch conforms to Binomial Distribution. (10 mks)

QUESTION SIX
a) Clearly highlight the assumption in analysis of variance (5 mks)

b) To test the significance of the variation of retail prices of a commodity in three towns, Eldoret, Nairobi and Mombasa, four shops were chosen at a random in each town and prices observed in kshs as follows;

Do the data indicate that the prices in the three cities are significantly different? Given that ( for v1=2, v2=9, F0.05=4.26) (11 mks)
