SECTION ONE – (30 MARKS)

Differentiate between “print and meaning” reading disabilities giving an example of each. [4 marks]

Identify with examples three types of dyslexia. [6 marks]

Explain how you would assist a learner with the following reading errors

Substitution
(iii)
Transposition

Identify the two types of motivation. [2 marks]
(ii)
How would you help a learner who lacks motivation to be proficient in reading? [4 marks]

Describe 3 skills a teacher may use to remediate a grade four learner who can only recognize the names of the alphabet. [6 marks]

How would you use “self-regulatory” materials with a learner with reading difficulties? [2 marks]

SECTION TWO – (40 MARKS)

Distinguish between dyseidetic and dysphonetic readers and spellers by describing 5 symptoms of each. [20 marks]
8.
Explain how you would use Fernald and Glass methods to remediate reading in learners with reading difficulties. [20 marks]
9.
Analyse the steps of reading development in children according to Chall (1983) and explain why it is crucial for teachers to be knowledgeable on such steps. [20 marks]
10.
“Instructional material could be a major cause of reading difficulties in learners.” Discuss. [20 marks]
