Question One

“Developmental Psychology is all about the intertwined forces that shape human development.” In the light of the above statement explain what nature is and the role it plays in development. (5 marks)
b)
Discuss the concept nurture in relation to prenatal and perinatal development. Let your discussion be guided by effects of teratogens during intrauterine life and the conditions of the birthing process. (18 marks)

Explain the significance of the concept “context of development”. (3 marks)
b)
You have been invited as a guest speaker during the prize giving day of Diligent Teachers College, an institution that trains primary school teachers. Your wish is to deliver a speech that will impact on the trainee teachers appreciation of the complexity of factors that influence children’s development. In your speech bring out at least four issues that may arise from the children’s ecology and which may impact negatively on the following areas of development

Using relevant examples explain the concept developmental task. (5 marks)

“Adolescence is a crucial stage of development with enormous implications for the rest of an individual’s life”. Discuss the core issues of adolescent development in physical, cognitive, moral, emotional and social bringing out reasons why one adolescent will make a smooth transition while another one finds it difficulty to navigate the stage (18 marks)

a)
Give a detailed definition of adult status. (5 marks)
b)
Discuss four developmental issues of early adulthood focusing on Levinson’s theory and with examples describe the young adults who transit smoothly and those whose ride through the stage is bumpy.

Describe the concept climacterum and the psychological effects it may have on adult development. (5 marks)

Mr. and Mrs. Wafula are retired civil servants. They are generally a happy couple who fully participate in the activities of their local community. Using Erikson’s theory explain the kind of life the two senior citizens may have lived through middle adulthood and show the psychosocial state they are navigating at the moment. (18 marks)
