This paper has five questions. Answer any three questions.

Question one
“The prescientific communities of Kenya had their own methods of controlling the occurrence of genetic problems. Age old practices were instituted to guard against the birth of children with birth defects”

Explain the concept genetic anomalies. (5 marks)
(b)
Discuss in detail any three community practices that were instituted to check the occurrence of genetic problems within families. (18 marks)
Question two
“Infancy should be a time for the child to develop attachment relationships with significant people in the family.”

Explain the concept attachment and its significance to the psychological well-being of children. (5 marks)
(b)
Discuss in details any three challenges encountered in the Kenyan family today and which may interfere with the development of secure attachments in children. (18 marks)
Question Three
“For many years psychological theories of child development focused on the significance of the mothers role in child rearing. Current issues in parenting seem to be shifting the focus as the advocacy for both maternal and paternal involvement indicate. For the best results in child rearing co-parenting is the ultimate advice.”

“In many traditional cultures the rite of passage was a very significant life event for both boys and girls.”

Question Five
“Wanjala turns forty-five this year but he could easily be mistaken for fifty-five. His fifteen years of marriage have been characterized by conflict which has culminated in divorce. Wanjala’s drinking habits have grossly interfered with his working life and he is at the blink of losing his job.”
