Searle (1969) divides speech acts into six basic categories. Discuss with examples these six basic categories. (20 marks)

Grice’s (1973) cooperative principle assumes that people cooperate in the process of communication in order to reduce misunderstandings. In order to comply with this principle, speakers need to follow a number of maxims. (20 marks)
i. Define each of these maxims
ii. Explain the differences between ‘quietly violating’ a maxim and maxim
iii. Maxim and ‘openly flouting’ a maxim
iv. Explain with examples how implicatures can be generated using each of these maxims.
