“Sentences are classified into TWO broad categories.” Using relevant examples from English, discuss the two categories. (30 Marks)

a. Explain the difference between a kernel and a transform? (5 Marks)
b. With sentential examples, discuss ANY FIVE possible transformations in English. (15 Marks)
Question THREE
a. Using examples, state the FOUR rules that govern rewrites of syntactic structures of English (4 Marks).
b. Use phrase structure diagrams to analyze the following constructions: (16 Marks)

iii. A business is operated by a young man.
iv. Come here.
Question FOUR
With sentential illustrations from English, discuss any FIVE syntactic classifications of subordinate clauses. (20 Marks)
Question FIVE
a. Explain any FOUR types of ellipsis that occur in syntactic structures of English (12 Marks)
b. With clear examples, discuss how apposition occurs in English grammatical constructions (8 Marks)
