Answer QUESTION ONE and any other TWO QUESTIONS. All questions carry equal
marks. (20 MARKS)
QUESTION ONE (20 MARKS)
a) Differentiate between Link State and Distance Vector routing algorithms. (4 Marks)
b) Describe any five Routing metrics. (5 Marks)
c) Explain the Count to Infinity problem and how it can be solved using any two methods.
(6 Marks)
d) Explain Routing Hierarchy in OSPF. (2 Marks)
e) Explain the three basic functions performed by BGP peers. (3 Marks)

QUESTION TWO (20 MARKS)
a) You have been contracted by Strathmore to setup a network for them on a floor
consisting of several rooms. The user requirements dictate that 8 horizontal cable runs be
installed to each room. The selected Facility services a catchment area of 20 rooms.
i. Determine the total number of cable drops to the facility. (1 Mark)
ii. Calculate the number of 48-port switches that are required to provide connectivity
from the workstations to the facility. (1 Mark)
iii. Explain with the aid of a diagram how the switches can be interconnected to make
one LAN with an Internet connection. (4 Marks)
iv. Describe any four protocols that can be used in the above LAN. (4 Marks)
b) Your company has applied for and received a class C network address of 193.50.40.0.
You are required to subdivide your physical network into 8 subnets, which will be
interconnected by routers where each subnet will have at least 10 hosts. You will also be
required to use a class C custom subnet mask and will have a router between the subnets
to route packets from one subnet to another. Determine;
i. The number of bits you will need to borrow from the host section of the network
address. (2 Marks)
ii. The custom subnet mask. (1 Mark)
iii. The IP address of host number 10 in subnet number 7 (2 Marks)

iv. The IP address of the router interface to which subnet number 5 is connected
(2 Marks)
v. Determine whether these addresses are valid. (3 Marks)

a) Safaricom would like to migrate from IPv4 to IPv6;
i. Briefly describe how this migration will affect the company. (4 Marks)
ii. Explain the mechanisms that you can advice safaricom to employ to ensure both
compatibility between old and new systems and a gradual transition does not
impact the functionality of their Internet. (8 Marks)
b) Explain the following terms as implemented in IPv6;
i. Unicast addresses (4 Marks)
ii. Anycast addresses (2 Marks)
iii. DNS (2 Marks)

QUESTION FOUR (20 MARKS)
a) Briefly describe how IP multicast is achieved in IPv4 and IPv6. (8 Marks)
b) Due to competition from other mobile service providers Safaricom would like to have a
competitive advantage by introducing several multicast applications, describe any four of
those applications and how they can help the company improve its revenue.

c) Explain the operation of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). (4 Marks)

QUESTION FIVE (20 MARKS)
a) A company would like to implement mobile and wireless IP. Explain the security
considerations that it needs to put in place for each giving five exposures and solutions.

b) Briefly explain how an international company can achieve the following; (9 Marks)

ii. VoIP protocols
iii. Congestion control and quality of service in their network
