Question Two

A bakery shop keep stock of a popular brand of cake. Daily demand based on the past experience is given below
Daily demand 0 15 5 35 45 50
Probability 0.01 0.15 0.20 0.50 0.12 0.02
Using the following sequence of random numbers simulate the demand for the next 10 days

48, 78, 09, 85, 95, 74, 18, 12, 66, 87

Find out the stock situation if the owner of the bakery decides to make 35 cakes every day, unmet demand is lost. (8 Marks)

Highlight the steps involved in Monte-Carlo simulation.
(5 Marks)
What are the advantages of:-
Verification and validation of simulation model.
(4 Marks)
Using rand numbers in simulation.
(3 Marks)
Question Three

A random variable x has the following distribution
x 1 2 4 6 8 10
f(x) 0.10 0.20 0.25 0.20 0.15 0.10

Plot the cumulative distribution and find the values of x corresponding to the following two digit random numbers: 03, 41, 68, 94, 85. (6 Marks)
Universal bank is considering to open a drive in window for customer service. Management estimates that customers will arrive at the rate of 15 per hour. The teller whom it is considering to staff the window can service customers at the rate of one every three minutes.
Assuming Poisson arrivals and exponential service

Find

Average number in the waiting line
Average number in the system
Average waiting time in line
Average waiting time in the system
Highlight the factors considered when selecting a simulation language.
(4 marks)
Question Four

The distribution of inter-arrivals time in a single server model is:-
T 1 2 3
f(t) ¼ ½ ¼
and the distribution of service time is

S 1 2 3
f(s) ½ ¼ ¼

Develop a simulation table using two digit random numbers 12, 40, 48, 90, 63, 18, 48, 26, 88, 94 to generate arrivals and 50, 81, 12, 34, 16, 88, 94, 33, 54, 11 to generate the corresponding service time. Compute the average waiting time in queue. (10 marks)
Using the flow balance equation (flow out = flow in) show that the proportion of time spent by a system in any state can be expressed in terms of the proportion of time spent at state zero. Determine the properties of a stable system.
