Question One
(a) Identify five main characteristics of research and describe each one of them. (10 marks)

Question Two
(a) The general systematic approach in the research process is listed below. Modify the
approach to make it a scientific process.

(a) What are the steps involved in designing a questionnaire? (5 marks)
(b) The director of Institutional Research is concerned about the reasons why undergraduates
drop out before graduation. Each student who drops out is sent a questionnaire as soon as it
is known that the student is not returning.
i) Construct 5 items that might go into this questionnaire. (5 marks)

Question Four
(a) Identify five characteristics of good hypothesis statements. (5 marks)
(b) study is conducted to determine the effects of three perfume fragrances upon selection
decisions made by panelists of a recruitment board during face-to-face interviews. Three
high school graduate interviewees from Highway High School were randomly short-listed.
Each one of them was then interviewed by one of three different panelists. At the end of the
interview, selection decisions were made. Identify the: (6 marks)
i) Three constants
ii) One Independent variable
iii) One Dependent variables of this study.
iv) Identify a possible intervening variable that might be operating in this situation.
v) Using the variables identified above, develop two or more related hypotheses.
Hypotheses may be stated in directional or non-directional form. (5 marks)
vi) Suppose the same perfume fragrances are used with two groups of high school and
college graduates. Both men and women are included. The study is conducted in two
different venues using three smaller groups of each graduate level in each venue, each
small group using a different perfume.
