1. Referring to the main characters in the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare and the novella Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, evaluate the motivation to colonization and approach by the colonizers.

2. Evaluate the depiction of issues of “otherness” and estrangement by Jean Rhys in Wide Sargasso Sea and Charlotte Bronte in Jane Eyre.

3. EITHER

a) Negritude and Black Consciousness were an important aspect of anti colonialism. Discuss their strengths and weaknesses as anti colonialism ideologies.

OR

b) The language question is a salient feature of post colonial discourse. Explain with reference to relevant scholars and literary works.

4. Critically discuss the depiction of the pre-colonial Africa and the cultural clash resultant from the encounter between the West and African civilizations by at least two African writers.

5. Explain the following concepts giving examples from literary texts studied in the course:
a) Hybridity
b) “Otherness”
c) “In-Betweenness”
d) Exile
e) Subversion

6. Nationhood and nation formation face various challenges and obstacles in the modern post colonial world. Explain with illustrations form works of art you are familiar with.
