1. Identify and illustrate the main differences between inflectional and
derivational affixes as aspects of the English morphology. (10 marks)

2. a) What is the difference between an allomorph and a morpheme? (3 marks)

b) Describe the morphophonemic variations of the past tense and plural
forms of the English language. (12 marks)

3. a) Explain the three key elements involved when one says she knows a word
in a given language. (9 marks)

b) Define the three types of words in English and give one example for each type. (6 marks)

4. a) Discuss the use and meaning of “out”, “over” and “under” in the
formation of English compound verbs. (12 marks)

b) What do you understand by the determinants/determinatum relationship
in the compounding process? (3 marks)

5. a) Identify the morphemes in each of the following words:
i) Impolitely
ii) Deconstructionism
iii) Uneconomically
iv) Hypersensitivity
v) Underdevelopment (10 marks)

b) Using the prefixes in each of the words in a) above, provide another word
that uses each of the prefixes so identified. (5 marks)

6. a) Define the term ‘morphology’ as used in Linguistics and give any 3
problems in morphology. (5 marks)

b) How relevant is your study of English morphology to you as a future
teacher of English at the secondary school level? (10 marks)
