1. Compulsory: “The African Oral tradition provides a model to which
most of the East African poets in the Song School of Poetry keep turning
for inspiration and style”. Using at least two Poems from two East
African Poets examine the extent to which the East African “Song School”
of Poetry exhibits elements characteristics of the oral heritage. (25 marks)

2. Referring to at least two of his poems explore the ways in which themes of
historical significance are manifested in the poetry of David Rubadiri. (15 marks)

3. Discuss how Richard Ntiru’s Poetry reveals an awareness of the
paradoxes, contradictions and ironies of life? Illustrate your answer by
citing specific poems. (15 marks)

4. Discuss, with examples, at least three elements of figurative language
used by East African Poets. (15 marks)

5. How “East African” are the following two poets? Jagjit Singh and Jim
Chaplin? Illustrate your answer by referring to the poetry of the two
writers. (15 marks)

6. Read the following Poem entitled “Daughter of the Lowland” and answer
the questions that follow:
a) Identify and illustrate the tone of the Poem. (3 marks)

b) Identify three major poetic devices in the Poem and discuss how
effectively they are used. ( 9 marks)

c) What philosophical issue is raised by the Poet? Explain with
illustrations from the Poem. (3 marks)
