CAT II MPE 242 - MECHANICS OF MACHINES II

1. A shearing machine has to cut flat strips 8 cm wide and 2 cm thick. The work required is 1.2 kN-m per sq cm. cut. The flywheel has a speed of 200 rpm. At the start of each cut and its radius of gyration is 80 cm. Assuming that the energy required for cutting is supplied by the flywheel and its speed reduction is not to exceed 15% of the maximum, determine
i. The mass of the flywheel
ii. The torque that must be applied to the flywheel so that it can regain fully, the speed in 3 seconds. (10mks)

2. In a simple watt governor, the length of the upper arm is 40 cm and its inclination to the vertical is 30 degrees. Estimate the percentage change in speed for a rise in the level of balls by 1.8 cm. (10mks)

3. A spring-controlled governer of the Hartnell type with a central spring under compression has each ball of mass 3kg. The length of the vertical arm of the bell crank lever is 12 cm and that of the horizontal arm is 8 cm. The radius of rotation of the ball is 12 cm for the lowest position of the governer sleeve and the ball arms are parallel to the governer axis. Determine the initial load on the spring in order that the sleeve may begin to lift 300 rpm. If the stiffness of the spring is 20N/mm, what is the equilibrium speed, corresponding to the sleeve lift of 1.5 cm. (10mks)
