INSTRUCTIONS
There are two sections in this paper. Section A, short structured and Section B, long structured questions respectively
Attempt ALL the questions in Section A and Section B in the spaces provided in this question paper.
All working must be shown clearly for full marks to be awarded to you.

SECTION A (60 Marks)
1) Show the concentrated magnetic lines of force in the figure below when two magnets are placed aside. (2marks)

2) What is the reading of the micrometer shown below? (2marks)

3) a) Identify two factors which affect pressure in solids (2marks)

b) The air in each of the four tyres of a motor car exerts a pressure of 3.0x105Nm-2. Each tyre is in contract with the ground over an area of 80cm2. Estimate the mass of the car. (3marks)

4) Air is blown between two light balls as shown below,

State and explain the observation made. (3marks)

5) a) Define centre of gravity. (2marks)

b) Determine the weight of the metre rule shown below. (2marks)

6) Complete the ray diagram below showing an object placed in front of a concave mirror. (3marks)

7) State two factors which affect the strength of an electromagnet. (2marks)

8) a) State Hooke’s law. (2marks)

b) A mass of 200g is suspended from the lower end of a spring. If the spring extends by 100mm and the elastic limit of the spring is not exceeded, what is the spring constant? (3marks)

9) a) State two uses of a convex mirror. (2marks)

b) Complete the ray diagram below showing a parabolic mirror. (3marks)

10) Why is the Bunsen burner made with a wide base? (2marks)

11) State Bernoulli’s principle. (2marks)

12) A convex mirror of focal length 9cm produces an image on its axis 6cm from the mirror. Determine the position of the object. (3marks)

13) a) Name two classifications of waves. (2marks)

b) A water wave travels 12m in 4 seconds. If the frequency of the wave is 2Hz, calculate:
i) The speed of the wave.

ii) The wavelength of the wave. (2marks)

14) a) State the principle of moments. (2marks)

b) The handle of a door is near its outside edge. Explain. (2marks)

c) If the handle is 75cm from the hinges and a force of 60N is applied to it to open the door, calculate the moment of force. (2marks)

15) Complete the magnetic field pattern due to a single wire through a cardboard shown below (3marks)

16) a) Study apparatus A and B shown below and answer the questions which follow:

Name them.
A: (1mark)
B: (1mark)

b) State the uses of apparatus A and B above.
A: (2marks)
B: (2marks)

SECTION B (40MARKS)
17) In an experiment to estimate the size of an oil (olive) molecule, a drop of oil is allowed to drip on water that had a fine powder scattered on its surface. A film of oil of radius 10.0cm was formed on the surface of the water.
a) Explain why the drop of oil placed on the surface of water spreads to form a continuous film (2marks)

b) Explain briefly one reason for believing that the film of oil so formed is one molecule thick (2marks)

c) Why is fine powder scattered on the surface of water? (2marks)

d) When 60drops of oil were run out of a burette, there was a drop of 1.0cm3 in the volume of oil in the burette. What is the volume of one drop of oil in mm3. (3marks)

e) Calculate the area, in mm2 of the film of oil and hence the size of the oil molecule. (4marks)

18) The figure below shows uniform balanced beam.

i) What is meant by a balanced beam? (2marks)

ii) What is the magnitude of force F? (3marks)

iii) Explain why the weight of the beam may be ignored when taking moments about the pivot? (2marks)

iv) What is the reaction of the pivot? (3marks)

19) a) What is a wave? (2marks)

b) Distinguish between a transverse and longitudinal wave. (2marks)

c) The figure below shows the wave profile. Determine;

i) The amplitude of the wave. (1mark)

ii) The frequency of the wave. (3marks)

iii) The wavelength if the speed v of the wave is 20m/s2. (2 Marks)

20) a) The figure below shows two iron nails picked up by a magnet;
i) Why are the nails attracted by the magnet? (2marks)

ii) What type of magnetic pole is induced at the head-end of the nails? (1mark)

iii) Explain why the nails spread out at the end further from the magnet. (2marks)

iv) What will be the effect on the spread out nails if a N-pole of another magnet is brought near to their head ends? (2marks)
