ECE 528E: TELEVISION ENGINEERING

QUESTION ONE
a. A transmission line has a characteristic impedance of 75 ohms and a nominal capacitance of 64pF/m. Find nominal inductance per metre. If the diameters of the inner conductor and outer conductor as 0.584 mm and 3.78 mm respectively, calculate dielectric constant of the insulation. Assume that the conductance per unit length and resistance per unit length are negligible. (5mks)

b. Maximum and minimum values of r.m.s voltages on a certain transmission line are 100 V and 25 V respectively. Calculate the reflection coefficient and characteristic impedance of the transmission line. Assume that the line is terminated in a load of 300 ohms. (5mks)

QUESTION TWO
a. A TV transmitting antenna mounted at a height of 100 metres radiates 10 KW of power at a frequency of 50 MHz. Power is radiated equally in all directions in azimuth. Calculate:
i. Maximum line-of-sight range
ii. The field strength at a receiving antenna mounted at a height of 9m at a distance of 10 km
iii. The distance at which the field strength reduces to 1mV/m. (6mks)

b. Deduce an expression for TV field strength in the troposphere. (4mks)

QUESTION THREE
a. What are remedial measures adopted? (4mks)
b. How are ghost images due to reflection differentiated from those due to signal reflection? (2mks)
c. A receiving antenna is picking up a 50 micro Volt signal. The transmitting station switches to a new antenna which has a 5dB gain over the original antenna. How large is the new signal picked us by the receiving antenna? (4mks)
