INSTRUCTIONS: Answer only three questions. All questions carry equal 20 marks
Q.1 a) i) State the characteristics of an op-amp?
ii) Draw the schematic symbol of an op-amplifier and list the different
terminals with their functions. [8marks]
b) i) Briefly explain the need for compensating networks in op-amp.
ii) Explain the difference between the integrator and differentiator.[8marka]
c)With reference to Fig.1 above ,calculate cut-off frequency Fc. [6marks]
Q2. a) i) Explain the virtual ground concept.
ii) Explain how an op-am can be utilized as a sign changer and scale
changer. [8marks]
b)
i) Calculate the closed loop voltage gain Acl
ii) Calculate the output voltage
iii) If Avol=100,000, calculate the value of Vid I in Fig 2
iv) Calculate Zin and Zout (cl) Assume Avol=100,000 and Zout (ol) = 75 [8marks]
c) List the applications of a stable multivibrator [4marks]
Q3. a) i) Enumerate the effects of negative feed back on the various
characteristics of an amplifier.
ii) A negative feed back of 0.0005 is applied to and amplifier whose
open loop gain is 65 db. If the open loop gain gets reduced by
12% by how much does the overall gain gets altered. [10marks]
b) i) Define and explain your comprehension of “SLEW RATE”
ii) What are the limitations of open loop op-amp configurations?
iii) Explain the term bandwidth in an op-amp. [10mark]
c) Cite a few applications of voltage and current-time base Circuits.[5marks]
Q4. a) Cite and explain the various types of feedbacks. [8marks]
b) Describe with essential derivations the effect of negative feedbacks on the
bandwidth (BW) and distortion in an amplifier. [8marks]
c) i) State the constituent part of an oscillator
ii) State and briefly elucidate on “Barkhausen Criterion” for
oscillators.
Q5. a) i) Draw a circuit of Hartley oscillator and explain its operability,
Derive the expression and frequency of oscillators if L1=20? H,
and L2 = 2MH and a variable capacitance. Determine the range of
capacitance values if the frequency is varied between 950 KHz and
2050 KHZ. [8marks)
b) i) What is face shift oscillator? Cite merits and demerits.
ii) Briefly explain a quartz oscillator (illustrate your answer with a
neat circuit diagram). [12marks]
