1. (a) What are the basic principles of hydraulics? [4 marks]

(b) With the aid of a diagram, describe the operation of a closed center
hydraulic system raising a load. [13 marks]

(c) What are the advantages and disadvantages of hydraulic systems
compared to other common methods of transferring power? [8 marks]

(d) With the aid of a diagram explain the operation of an in-line axial piston
pump. [15 marks]

2. (a) What are the purposes for which pressure control valves are used?[4 marks]

(b) What precautions should be taken before servicing valves? [5 marks]

(c) What factors does a designer of a hydraulic system consider when
choosing a seal? [6 marks]

3.(a) With the aid of diagrams show an open loop control system used to
control the water level in a tank and show its block diagram.[10 marks]

(b) Discuss the purpose of electrohydraulic servovalves in hydraulic systems.[5 marks]

4. (a) Define the three ratings used to judge pump quality. [6 marks]
(b) A pump operating at a pressure of 100kg/cm2 has a bearing life of
4800 hrs. If the operating pressure is raised to 200 kg/cm2, how long could the bearings be expected to last? [4 marks]
(c) What are the possible causes of excessive wear in a hydraulic pump?[5 marks]

5. (a) Sketch a typical single-acting cylinder used in a hydraulic system.[5 marks]

(b) Explain the features that a hydraulic reservoir must have in order to serve its purpose. [6 marks]

(c) Explain four ways in which contamination gets into a hydraulic system.[4 marks]
