INSTRUCTIONS: Answer Question ONE and any other THREE Questions

QUESTION 1 (30 Marks)
(a) Scott A Shane and Karl T. Ulrich (2004) review work published in management on the topics of technological innovation, product development and entrepreneurship since the inception of the journal in 1954.
Required:
Outline the role of the following themes within the domain of Research and Development, Innovation, Product Development and Entrepreneurship:
(i) The role of the individual
(ii) Organization design
(iii) Technology strategy
(iv) Knowledge transfer
(v) Product planning and portfolios. (15 Marks)

(b) PC Smith and M. Goddard (2002) examines the organizational context within which performance management is undertaken and notes that it becomes most important within hierarchical organizations that allow considerable autonomy amongst developed units. They argue that performance management should embrace four broad functions: formulation of strategy; development of performance measurement instruments; interpreting such measures; and encouraging appropriate organizational responses to performance information.
Required:
Review the literature on the four broad functions and in each case briefly explain the existing operational research (OR) contribution. (15 Marks)

QUESTION 2 (23 Marks)
John Duretveit (2008) highlights criteria to be met by a scientific paper for publication as: the paper should have suggested headings and fulfill criteria of validity, reliability, supported conclusions, generalisability, ensuring that each section follows on from the other, and that the findings are related to previous research.
(a) Briefly explain the relevance of each in research. (13 Marks)

(b) Differentiate between vertical linking and horizontal linking. (4 Marks)

(c) „Style? for chosen journal is a combination of detail of explanation conciseness, and objectivity. Briefly explain meaning of each. (6 Marks)

QUESTION 3 (23 Marks)
Armand Hatchuel (2009) presents and discusses, among alternative European currents, a “functionalist perspective for management research” (FPM) which redefines the identity, major and relevance of management research.
Required:
(a) Outline the main assumptions of FPM about the identity, rigor and relevance of management research. (15 Marks)

(b) Outline the application of theory of innovative design versus standard R & D and project management with respect to the findings. (8 Marks)

QUESTION 4 (23 Marks)
Committee on the Next Decade in Operations Research (CONDOR) paper (1998) entitled: Operations Research: The Next Decade summarizes some significant OR accomplishments and highlights some important opportunities in the fields of optimization, stochastic processes, the operational research/artificial intelligence interface, operational and modeling science, and manufacturing and logistics.
Required:
(a) Identify and highlight at least six potential areas in which operational research OR has been employed and discuss their economic impact. (11 Marks)

(b) Discuss the opportunities of Operational Research (OR) in the areas of:
(i) Optimization
(ii) Stochastic process and
(iii) Manufacturing and logistics (12 Marks)

QUESTION 5 (23 Marks)
T-S Jan*and C-G Jan (2000) uses the system dynamics methodology to develop a model that analyses the impacts of acquisition policy.
Required:
(a) Outline the characteristics of weapon systems development. (12 Marks)

(b) Elucidate clearly how a system dynamics model for Taiwan based on analysis of characteristics of weapon systems development was developed. (7 Marks)

(c) In their result and discussion, simulation technique was used. How was simulation technique employed? (4 Marks)
