Question 1

(a) Describe Rutherford`s atomic model based on his observations on scattering of alpha particles. Indicate the drawbacks of the model [10 marks]
(b) Describe Bohr`s atomic model and give it`s merits. [10 marks]

Question 2

(a) Give the electronic configuration of:
(1) O
(2) Cu
Comment on the electronic configuration of copper[6 marks]
(b)Describe characteristic of noble gases in view of their electronic configurations [4 marks]
(c)What is the empirical formula for the rodenticide which consists of 74.01 %C,5.23%H and 20.76% O? [10 marks]

Question 3

(a)Distinguish between the nature of bonds formed when sodium chloride and hydrogen chloride gas are formed from their elements in the gaseous state [4 marks]
(b)Comment on the octet rule in the formation of Hcl (g ) and also on its polar nature [8 marks]
(c)How is the magnitude of charge displacement measures in polar covalent bonds [4 marks]
(d)Define bond length and bond energy. Use the bond energies to calculate the enthalpy change in the formation of ammonia gas from nitrogen and hydrogen gas [8 marks]

(a) Discuss isomerism in alkanes and alkenes [10 marks]
(b) What happens when the following is carried out(give reactions)
I. Acetic acid is reacted with sodium carbonate. The sodium salt of carboxylic acid is then heated with solid sodium hydroxide
II. Propyl bromide is heated with alcoholic caustic potash
III. Propene is oxidized by potassium permanganate (vii)
IV. Ethyne reacts with hydrochloric acid [2.5x4 =10]

(d)Giving two examples, define conjugate acid-base pairs [4 marks]
