2. Answer any five questions
Question One
a) Give the assumptions of the Dalton`s atomic theory [6 marks]
b) Define the mole of a substance and Avogadro`s constant [4 marks]
c) A typical adult body consists of about 6 liters of blood, The haemoglobin content of the blood is about 15.5g/100 ml of blood. The approximate molecular weight of haemoglobin is 64,500, and there are four iron atoms in a haemoglobin molecule. Appproximately how many iron atoms are present in the blood of a typical adult [5marks]
d) Give the electronic configuration of the following

Question Two
a) Give the concept of principal quantum numbers ,shells, sub-shells an orbitals in an atom. Name the sub-shells and corresponding orbitals for principal quantum number 3 [12 marks]
b) A 110.520g sample of mineral water is analysed for its magnesium content. The magnesium ions in the sample is first precipitated as MgNH4PO4, and this precipitate is then converted to Mg2P2O7 which is found to weigh 0.0549g. Estimate the quantity of magnesium in parts per million(ppm, grams of magnesium per million grams of water) [8 marks]

a) Define acid and base according to Bronsted-Lowry theory. [4marks]
b) Give examples of water functioning as an acid and base according to Bronsted-Lowry theory.[4marks]
c) Write dissociation reaction of water. Give the value of dissociation constant of water at 250C.[3 marks]
d) Calculate the pH of 0.004M HCl. [4 marks]
e) Give the reactions for pitting corrosion. [5marks]

a) Give any two laboratory preparation reactions for alkenes. Give an example for each reaction.[6 marks]
b) Give the reactions when:
i. An alkene is hydrated in the prescience of dilute sulphuric acid.
ii. An alkene is oxidized in the prescence of acidified KMnO4. [5 marks]
c) What happens when calcium carbide reacts with water? Give the reaction. [3 marks]
d) Give the reactions to produce vinyl chloride and cyanoethylene from acetylene. [6 marks]

a) (i) Give the substitution reaction for benzene with alkyl halide. [2.5 marks]
(ii)What happens when acetic acid is heated in the prescence of P2O5. Give the reaction.

(iii)What are esters? Give any two preparation reactions [5 marks]
b) Give the preparation reactions for:
i. Phenol from chlorobenzene. [2.5 marks]
ii. Methyl ethyl ether from methanol. [2.5 marks]
c) Give the structural formula for the following molecules : [5 marks]
p-xylene, diphenyl ether, acetone, acetaldehyde, aniline
Question Six
a) The decomposition of hydrogen peroxide is given by: H2O2 H2 + 1/2O2. The following data gives the concentration of H2O2 as the decomposition proceeds .
