Exam Year:2012

1 you are provided with
sodium hydroxide solution K
1M hydrochloric acid N
phenophthalain indicator
a. Standardize solution K
b. Find the molarity of sodium hydroxide
procedure 1
using a pipette, transfer 25cm3 of sodium hydroxide solution into a conical flask. Add 2- 3 drops of phenophinale in indicator and titrate with hydrochloride acid solution N. From the burette until the mixture lurst turn colourless.
Record your results in the table
final buratte reading cm3
Initial buratte reading cm3
volume of solution N used cm3
a. Calculate the average of solution N used
b. Calculate the moles of hydrochloride acid used.
d. Find the molds of sodium hydroxide used.
e. Calculate the molarity of sodium hydroxide solution K.
Procedure 2
measure 50cm3 of solution N and transfer it into a 250cm3 plastic beaker. Record the initial temperature of solution N to nearest 0.5oc. Rinse the buratte thouroughly with distilled water and fill it upto 0.0cm3. Mark with quandaryed sodium hydroxide solution K. From the burette add 10cm3 of solution K to solution N in the beaker. Stir gently with the thermometer and record the new temperature in the table below.
Continue adding 10cm3 portions of solution K recording new temperature after each addition until 80cm3 of K has been added.
a. Plot a graph of temperature (y-axis) against tatal volume of sodium hydroxide (solution N) added (x-axis)
b. From the graph determine the maximum temperature rise
c. Write a balanced equation for the neutralization reaction
d. From the graph determine the volume of sodium hydroxide required to completely neutralize the hydrochloride acid
