1. a) What does the term “hypodermic-needle” view mean? [2marks]
b) The nature of a relationship is contingent upon the punctuation of
communication sequences between the communicants. Explain. [5marks]
c) Explain how concepts and models are interrelated in human communication. [5marks]
d) Elaborate on the duality of ‘being and seeming’ that gets in the way of human dialogue. [5marks]
e) In transactional communication, a person is neither a source nor a receiver
but a participant in the transaction. Explain. [5marks]
f) List four types of public speaking giving one advantage of each.[8marks]
2. a) Compare and contrast any two communication models, and list their
strengths and weaknesses/shortcomings. [10marks]
b) Describe the notion of process as it applies to human communication. [10marks]
3. In public speaking, speech takes on aspects of goodness and badness depending
on how one uses it. In other words, a speech can be described as neither moral
nor immoral-it is amoral. [12marks]
a) List and briefly discuss some speech practices considered unethical by
many speech communication writers. [12marks]
b) Comment on, and give examples of universal, individual and situational
codes of ethics. [8marks]
4. Some classroom communication can be objectifying while others can be personifying.
a) Differentiate with examples between the two types with regard to classroom discourse. [10marks]
b) Discuss at least five major problems that prevent our understanding of
human communication. [10marks]
5. In all human communication, contexts provide moods of their own. As a result,
they (contexts) also influence the way we behave towards, and communicate with
each other.
a) Discuss the above statement with the help of examples. [10marks]
b) Discuss the five levels of human communication beginning with the weakest level. [10marks]
