Answer ALL questions in Section A and ANY TWO questions in Section B.
Illustrate your answers with relevant examples and/or well labelled diagrams where appropriate.
SECTION A. (60 MARKS)
Answer all the questions in this section. All questions carry equal marks
1)State any six major conclusions reached by Mendel in his work on the inheritance of characteristics.
2)Distinguish among morphological, phylogenetic, and biological species concepts.
3)Briefly explain three ways in which variations can be introduced in a population through meiosis.
4)Freckles(F)are dominant to no freckles(f). Brown(G) are dominant to blue eyes (g). Both traits exhibit complete dominance. Two individuals are both heterozygous for both genes.Show possible allele combinations that each individual can produce in their gametes.
If these two procreate, state the likely phenotypic ratio of their children to be.
5)Outline the consequences of a base substitution mutation with regards to sickle cell anaemia.
6)Briefly explain the evidence from homologous anatomic structures that support the theory of evolution.
7)State any six potential harmful effects of genetic modification of organisms.
8)Outline any six contemporary examples where evolution can be observed.
9)Describe how natural selection affects the general population patterns.
10)Briefly explain Jean B.Lamarck's model for how adaptations evolve.
SECTION B:40 MARKS
Answer any two questions. Each question carries 20 marks.
11)Discuss factors that contribute to the maintenance of genetic isolation during the process of speciation.
12)Describe the application of DNA profiling to determine paternity and also in forensic investigations.
13)Discuss a specified gene, with regard to structure, mutation, and nature of action.
14)With regard to HIV/AIDS,discuss the contribution of the human host genetic factors to both the risk of acquiring infections and developing severe complications.
