1. Using two examples for each, determine what the following syntactic tests are used for;
(i) Cleft constructions.
(ii) Subject auxiliary inversion.
(iii) Obligatoriness.
(iv) Contraction.
(v) Expletives it and there.

2. State the phrases found in the following sentences and provide the phrase structure rules for each.
(a) Kansa has not sung a song.
(b) The teacher warned the class that the exam would be difficult.
(c) Asha has met a student in the classroom.
(d) The bus stopped suddenly.

3. Identify the semantic roles for each of the following arguments (nouns) in the sentences;
(a) A big green insect flew in to the soup.
(b) John’s mother sent a letter to Mary.
(c) Frank threw himself into the sofa.
(d) The ice melted.

4. Show the relationship between the deep structure and the surface structure by providing phrase structure rules and phrase markers for each of the following constructions. Use relevant examples to clarify your answer.
(a) V - Movement.
(b) I - Movement.
(c) NP - Movement.

5. Draw trees (phrase markers) for each of the following sentences:
(i) The constant rain forced the abandonment of the next day’s plains.
(ii) The public never had faith in his ability to handle the job.
(iii) The steamboat could have been cruising near the beach.
(iv) I have returned from my vacation.
