INSTRUCTIONS: Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions.

a) Study the sentences given below and answer questions (i) –(v) that follow. (30 marks)
I. The large group of students saw the film.
II. The new teacher is tall and athletic.
III. You can tell me all the nasty gossip.
IV. If you like the, job take it.
V. The thief must have thought that the police might arrest him.
a. For each sentence identify and name the principal elements of clause structure.
b. Give a list of (a) all attributive objectives in sentence (i) –(v) (b) give a list of all predicative adjectives in sentences (i) –(v)
c. Explain the function of the prepositional phrase in sentence 1 a) (i) above.

a) Explain the difference between open class of items and closed class of items. (8 marks)
b) Using nouns, explain briefly how some classes of words belong to both open and closed class of items. (12 marks)
3. Identify and list the adverbs in the following sentences. Briefly explain the type of adverb each is:-

b) His room is quite at the end of the corridor.

e) I haven’t met him yet.
f) I didn’t say anything, naturally.
g) Suddenly, a thunderclap roared loudly and frightened all the pupils.
h) He marked all the scripts notwithstanding the loud noise.
i) The men here have been displaced.
j) He would lodge the cheque now. (20 marks)
