QUESTION 1
(a)Writing for media requires that a reporter sorts out details and neatly package important information as news for his/her audience. Using relevant examples discuss five criteria used to determine what news is. (10 marks)

(c)Describe why progress and development in a country supplies newsworthy items to news writers. Give relevant examples in your answer. (5 marks)

(a)Imagine you are news writer for a leading media house in Kenya. What are some of the key sources of news that you would keenly follow so as to have good news for your audience? (10 marks)
(b)Using the facts provided in the attached exhibit 1, write a news story of about 200 words. (10 marks)
Exhibit 1
Parts of the wreckage scene included pistols, cash money and other personal effects. Prof Saitoti and Orwa Ojode were aboard the helicopter make – Euro-copter AS 350.
It crashed shortly after 9am in Kibuku area in Ngong. The two leaders, their bodyguards and the two pilots perished in the accident.
The Chopper left early in the morning from Wilson Airport and was headed towards Ndhiwa in Homa-Bay County before the tragedy occurred.
Internal Security Minister Prof George Saitoti and his assistant minister Joshua Orwa Ojodeh die in plane crash early today.
They are among six people who died in a police helicopter crash early today. Plane crash occurred in Ngong area on the outskirts of Nairobi.
The helicopter is said to have exploded on impact. The bodies of te deceased have been taken to Lee funeral Home.
The pilots were identified as aptain Nancy Gituanja and Captain Luke Oyugi. Saitoti and Ojode bodyguards, Inspector Joshua Tonkei and Sergeant Thomas Murimi also died in the accident.
Senior government officials among them the Prime Minister, Raila Odinga arrived at the scene and promised thorough investigations. The Vice President Kalonzo and Commissioner of Police Matthew Iteere said insvetigations have been launched to establish the cause of the accident.
