In an experiment to demonstrate atmospheric pressure, a plastic bottle is partially filled with hot water and the bottle is then tightly corked. After some time the bottle starts to get deformed.
i) State the purpose of the hot water
ii) State the reason why the bottle gets deformed

i) To remove the air from the bottle

ii) Pressure imbalance on the inside and outside causes the higher atmospheric pressure on the outside to act on the bottle

iii) The hot water drives air out of the bottle. On cooling, the steam inside condenses creating a region of low pressure inside. The higher atmospheric pressure deforms the bottle
