Impacts of cold war

The cold war began from 1944 (towards the end of WW2) because of the needs of both the Soviet Union and the United States. The Soviet Union placed security above all other considerations, and this was not sufficiently appreciated by the United States.
It was a war of suspicion and propaganda between the two powers, each afraid to attack each other. In the process Africa remained in between the 2 superpowers claiming to be non-aligned thus brought some benefits an at times, losses to the African states. The small powers could afford to be non-aligned precisely because the big powers were already afraid of going to war.
In reality the cold war was an outcome of interaction between the important phenomena - ideology and nuclear power. The superpowers were afraid of each other because of ideology and also due to the danger of a nuclear break out.
In Angola the cold war created civil war between National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (USA) supported (UNITA) and the National Front for Liberation of Angola (FNLA) which was supported by peasants.
In Mozambique the USA was against the Liberation Front for Mozambique (FRELIMO) under Eduardo Mondlane and later Samora Machel - the USA supported the African Union of Independent Mozambique (UNANU) and the war took many years and lives.
The USA favoured capitalist economies in Africa such as Kenya, S. Africa, Nigeria etc while Russia backed Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, each power providing finance and arms to their surrogate states.
