1. Europeans gained prestige especially France which had suffered several humiliations was able to retain her position as a great power because of colonial possessions

2. By using the policy of divide and rule, colonial powers intensified ethnic differences leading to bitter rivalry which has lingered up to now e.g. Tutsi
