1. The Ndebele and Shona desired to regain their independence from the BSAC.

2. Erosion of traditional authority as Lobengula's sons did not succeed their father because Rhodes sent them to Cape Town instead to be educated

3. Loss of land as the company took away all the good land

4. Creation of reserves for Africans in areas that either did not have water or were infested with tsetse flies which killed their cattle greatly angered them

5. The British ruined the regimental towns, refused to recognise the Indunas as well as their right to give out land

6. The British were brutal e.g. treated the traditional leaders with disrespect

7. Imposition of hut tax which was collected with a lot of brutality


8. The company disregarded the Ndebele customs like the class system and treated everybody equally angered them

9. Shona resented company interference with their trading activities by forcing them to buy expensive goods from the company

10. Europeans always failed to pay wages to their workers by threatening them before pay day so that they would run away.
