Historical background: South Africa has a long history of interracial conflicts and wars due to apartheid rule which affected industrial development in the country.

Labor unrest: Due to racial labor policies, there were frequent riots, demonstrations and strikes form the frustrated blacks and colored.

Inadequate infrastructure: development of transport, communication, banking and insurance infrastructure were inadequate in area where blacks and colored lived reducing the exploitation of resources in those areas.

High influx of foreigners: High influx of foreigners from neighboring countries seeking employment led to high unemployment rates, crime rate thus scaring off investors.

High incidences of HIV: There is a high prevalence of AIDS in South Africa among the population taking toll of the working population and other resources used for industrial development.
