A ball of mass 200 g is thrown vertically upwards with velocity of 5 ms-1. The air resistance is 0.4 N. Determine:
i) The net force on the ball as it moves up;
ii) The acceleration of the ball;
iii) The maximum height reached by the ball,
(take acceleration due to gravity g = 10 ms-2)

i) F = mg = 0.2 X 10 = 2 N

Net force = 2 - 0.4 = 1.6 N

ii) F = ma

1.6 = 0.2 x a

a = 8m/s2

iii) v2 = u2 - 2as,

but v = 0m/s

s = $\frac{u^2}{2a}$ = $\frac{5\times 5}{2\times 8}$ = 1.5625 m
